You follow people for their art, their jokes, their niche — and lately half the timeline is politics. You've muted words, and it still leaks through. Here's why, and three ways to fix it, from the built-in options to a purpose-built free tool.
Bluesky's muted words (Settings → Moderation → Muted words) are genuinely useful and worth setting up first. But keyword mutes match literal text. People who post heavily about a topic route around them constantly: screenshots with no caption, abbreviations, emoji, deliberate misspellings, quote-posts, and images. So a follow who is mostly political will still flood your feed even with a long mute list.
Add the obvious terms and turn on "mute in your following feed." Good for occasional mentions; weak against heavy or obfuscated posters.
Effective, but blunt: you lose the non-political posts you followed them for, and it feels personal.
Instead of editing your real following feed, build a separate, pinnable feed that starts from exactly the accounts you already follow and filters out political posts — including a curated set of hundreds of political terms and common obfuscations, not just the literal word you typed. You can also hide whole accounts that are mostly political (account-level muting), so the obfuscation problem goes away. It's read-only (it reads your public follow list), there's no login, and nothing is posted on your behalf.
